Kmart Kitchen Makeovers
Many parents have turned their attention to the popular Kmart retro wooden kitchen, often priced around $100. One mum completely revamped hers for her daughter's third birthday, repainting it in a chic sage green with rattan-look cupboards. She replaced the original handles and even added faux cane webbing for a sophisticated touch. Another popular hack involves painting the kitchen and adding custom decals for the microwave and hot plate, with some even incorporating battery-operated lights for the oven.
Ikea Kitchen Innovations
The Ikea Duktig kitchen, typically around $129, is another favorite for DIY enthusiasts. Hacks include mounting the microwave to float, recessing the sink, and creating a stovetop from a wooden slab. Personalization is key, with some adding custom tea towels and chopping boards. One particularly ingenious idea involves painting the back of the Ikea kitchen with chalkboard paint, creating a dual-function play space that serves as both a kitchen and a cafe.
Beyond the Kitchen: Workshop and Cafe Concepts
Some parents have taken the concept even further, repurposing the toy kitchens into entirely different play scenarios. For construction-loving toddlers, the Kmart kitchen has been transformed into a functional workshop. This involves painting it in darker colors, removing kitchen elements, and adding metallic backsplashes, toolboxes made from storage trays, and even spiral hoses. These creative conversions cater to children with diverse interests, proving that a toy kitchen can be the foundation for endless imaginative play.
