In Garden Grove, California, a remarkable 100-year-old craftsman named Hal Yoak is bringing holiday cheer to his community through his passion for woodworking. From his humble garage workshop, Yoak meticulously handcrafts a delightful array of wooden toys, transforming his space into a festive storefront each year. This holiday season marks his busiest yet, with locals flocking to purchase his unique creations.

A Lifetime of Craftsmanship

Hal Yoak's journey with wood began in Ohio, long before his distinguished service in the Navy during the 1940s as part of Operation Magic Carpet. After his military service, he pursued a career in education, teaching at Pacifica High School in California. Throughout these diverse chapters of his life, his dedication to woodworking remained a constant. Previously, he crafted personalized canes and walking staffs, intricately carving the life stories of his clients into the wood, sending them across the globe. Now, his focus has shifted to creating charming wooden toys.

A Garage Transformed

Yoak's garage is a vibrant testament to his skill, filled with tools, paints, and an impressive collection of colorful toys. Visitors can find everything from dancing ducks and toy cars to helicopters, noisemakers, and wheeled dinosaurs. His workshop becomes a temporary holiday storefront every weekend during the festive season, drawing a steady stream of customers eager to acquire his handcrafted treasures. He reports this year is his busiest ever, even noting a significant amount of tips received.

The Secret to a Fulfilling Life

When asked about the secret to his long and fulfilling life, Yoak humorously replies, "I wish I knew. I'd sell it!" He believes that much of the answer lies within the walls of his workshop and the dedication he pours into each design. Yoak spends 365 days a year in his garage, working through the cold winters and hot summers, finding that the activity keeps him going. He finds immense joy in his craft, stating, "I like doing it. I really do."
